It’s a pivotal conversation in the characters’ understanding of their situation, so it makes sense to dwell on it long enough for the readers to understand both its content and significance. Plus, we get other little highlights throughout, like the acolytes’ training exercise, another reminder that Rav is well-versed in the history of the previous champions, and as you said, seeing Ivan in a situation that lets him be more confident. The only things I can think of that have made longer conversations from comics and other story formats I’ve read in the past feel boring and drawn out is when the characters spend too much time explaining or discovering things that the reader is already aware of, or when the characters engage in a long moral discussion or debate that’s clearly used as a mouthpiece for the author’s opinion. While we do get a little bit of the former here (we know Eggie’s power is in her voice), there’s so much new information for us to digest in the conversation as a whole that this being a revelation to the characters doesn’t feel like, “Oh hey, congrats dumbasses, you finally figured it out!” Instead, they’re discovering something that we’re privy to thanks to narration, but doing so by reasoning from information that we didn’t have yet, so even something we already know feels like an authentic new discovery.
