DT, have you considered a simple captcha addon to the comment system? I read a couple of other comics, and sometimes even simple math captchas can put a huge dent in the spammers (but SPAM will still be able to make their posts because—presumably—they can do math and aren’t getting paid pennies per hour but are here for their own pleasure).
It looks like at least part of your site is PHP-based, so I might even be able to help with implementing that.
