Tsath – Rav brings the most competent magic user right now. He helped Ivan who can now presumably cast on Eggie. He bailed their asses out at least twice now.
This has been on my mind for a while.. I think Rav is supposed to be the comic relief here, poking fun at the others. But to me it feels more like he’s bullying them under the guise of ‘aww, can’t you take a joke?’ He doesn’t actually say anything funny, he’s just constantly insulting them and the reader is supposed to think it’s funny?
Maybe I’m off base, but as someone who’s been bullied by ‘can’t you take a joke?’, I’m hyper aware when I see it.
Maybe there’s intentional character development here that hasn’t paid off yet? Like Ivan is going to stand up for himself eventually, and Rav will stop being a dick?
Yeah my impression is that you’re spot on that Rav is an absolute asshole but that the author is aware and doing it intentionally. He is a bully, he’s consistently written like one, and while it’s frustrating to not see immediate comeuppance, I think that we’re well within good story pacing for people, including the party, to start getting increasingly fed up with him.
