My campaign setting is on the back of a dragonturtle named Narret. While absolutely I can’t guarantee it’d be the same as here, I’ll just throw in my two cents.
I have it so the South is to her left (because it’s her “south paw,”) and in consequence, the north is to her right. The base of her neck would be the “west pole,” if you will, and the base of her tail would be the “east pole.” Maps, as such, depict her facing the left.
(Also, barely related but I wanted to share some extra details – the four seasons in my setting are the results of Narret’s yearly pilgrimage, traveling through all four of the elemental planes. Also, the sun is an aeon stone made of the sun god’s eye, so the sun travels North to South since it’s spinning clockwise around Narret’s head.)
Interesting; usually having your own scripture translated would be a priority, let alone knowing how many Gods you have.
…Well, I say “usually”, but didn’t Catholicism keep the Bible in Latin until their hand was forced by the Protestants?
Anyway, kind of gives a vibe of “religious matters are for Experts, the peasants can just do as they’re told”.
Heh, with this setup, basically every Champion would have had zero knowledge about their God and what they wanted…
Well not necessarily because there are books of the Christian Bible that aren’t in the veryday Bible. And there are still segments being translated and analyzed for their historical component by those who study religions as far as I’ve heard. It would make sense only a select few know more than the everyday population and even if that select few even fewer actually have access to it all. I mean Christianity provides the Bible but how many other scriptures and religious artifacts are locked in the Vatican vault that an everyday person wouldn’t have access to or knowledge of? Like all things those who control information flow have the most power when it comes to religion.
I am back, and on the discord!
So much information about the pantheons.
there is one “main pantheon” of gods. More information on that could tell us a lot about society (especially as they are picked by popularity), if it was all war gods or more geared towards healing and creation.
the 4 strong (though that is just what the clerics think, not fact) gods “Aezin, Nelzea, Adahn, and Nihada” for Time, The World, Life and Death respectively. This displays a balanced pantheon. Their personifications also match those of the statue in the temple earlier- Adahn standing on Nelzea with Aezin flying around them and Nihada standing up above.
Sellorine could join the main pantheon through Eggy, so lots of pressure.
lots of gods, I wonder how they feel about having their scripture locked away. I also wonder who it is that decides what is public and what isn’t. Is it Mr. Stick, does he have higher ups, or could it even be the main pantheon?
I will point out that it depends on the religion if they want their followers to know it or keep it from them (you have Judaism on one side that in it the religion is very much some thing everyone can read and argue about the text and on other hand you have Catholic pre Protestant reformation that you could have been killed for it)

I think the concept of ‘North’ while riding on a world dragon/turtle is curious. Would it just be a turn of phrase, or do literal compasses work?
